The Different Types of Home Security Systems

Half of the 36 million security systems in the United States (as of 2009) are home security systems. The different types of systems that may be found in homes include systems that are hardwired into your home. There are also internet based systems, cellular home alarm system and wireless home security systems. These home security systems may also be equipped with cameras and monitors and may also be activated or monitored via a smartphone or other mobile device when you are away from the home.

Hardwired systems are the oldest type of home security system available and are generally the least expensive option. These types of systems require a landline in order to connect with a monitoring center. An internet based system relies on your home internet connection, which may be a drawback if you have a slow connection. Cellular systems are becoming somewhat popular as they transmit a signal via a cellular tower, much like your mobile phone while more expensive wireless or “all-in-one” systems are the easiest to install and are portable (in case you should move to another home).

Which Type of System Should I Consider for My Home?

The type of security system you should consider for your home security depends on the features you desire the most as well as the amount of money you are looking to spend. The more bells and whistles that you want for maximum protection, such as multi-room views and multi-device access (i.e. smartphone, tables, PC, etc.) the more you can expect to spend. You do not want to however limit yourself by price alone. You want to also take into consideration the type of crime that takes place in your area and the type of property you wish to protect. Consult with a home security professional who can help you assess your needs and determine the type of alarm system you need and the home system that is best for your home.
